American under water drone in South China Sea was seized by China's Navy. The USNS Bowditich was sailing in international waters on Thursday off the coast of Philippians when it was seized. The research ship is owned by US Navy, but operated by Miltary Sealift Command with a crew of contracted civilian mariners and scientist.
The American ship has stopped in water to pick up two under water drones.A Chinese naval ship shadowing Bowditch put a small boat into water as it came to a halt. The small boat came up along side and the Chinese crew took one of the drones.
The seized underwater drone was part of unclassified programme to obtain oceanographic data including salinity, temperature and clarity of water. These are useful to US military sonar data, since sound are affected by such factors.
